I was drawn to learning about horses feet after one of our own was displaying foot problems that were not improving with traditional methods of hoof care. The more i understood about the hoof, the more fascinated i became, both in regards to the amazing capability of a healthy hoof, as well as the potential for recovery from significant pathology, given the right conditions. Working as an EP, i try to maximise the right conditions, so that a healthy hoof is grown as a consequence of a healthy horse.

Providing and Promoting truly Holistic Hoof Care to achieve Reliable and Sustainable Results After owning and caring for barefoot horses for 10 years, in 2015 I enrolled on a 2 year Diploma with Equine Podiatry Training Ltd (EPT) to study the theory and learn the skills of an Equine Podiatrist (EP). I am fascinated by the functional anatomy of the equine hoof and lower limb, how it impacts the horse’s health and performance and how the horse’s nutrition and environment affect the health of the hoof. I am passionate about seeing the improvements we can make to horse’s welfare by promoting good quality hoof care and guiding and educating horse owners to do the same. I became an EP when my hoof care provider in 2015 said me to that my weanling Haflinger, Nosely, will either have good hooves or bad hooves and there is nothing I can do about it. Well, this didn’t seem correct to me. If us as humans can do things to improve our natural nails, why can’t equines!? I attended a fellow EP ‘Owners Hoof Health Day Course’ and it opened a whole new world to me, not only about hooves but a new why of thinking when it comes to the domestically kept equines, their diet, environment and their mental health – in fact, it made me realise we need A whole horse approach. As a traditional yard owner of 15 years, I was able to change the environment to track and Equicentral, and this has now been in place for the last 4 years. I changed the diet to more forage based, but I still wanted to learn more about how I can help aid the horses’ hoof care to support them. I really enjoy learning new skills and knowledge so I set about looking into learning more. I did another hoof course with the same EP but this time more advanced and in-depth, looking at the whole horse, such as diet and environment, how they are connected to the hoof. I wanted to learn more… so the lecturer told me who she qualified with and I then applied for a space for September 2019. Thanks to my husband looking after our three young boys, with a short COVID break for home schooling, I was able to complete the course in October 2022. With the combination of my EP clients, The Track liveries and my ever growing number of my own equines, I learn every day, expanding my knowledge and ability to help other horses in the future.

Like a lot of other Equine Podiatrists there was a point in my life when I realised that traditional methods were not working for my horses. I went out looking for information, tried and tested some barefoot theories and found a huge can of worms I wanted to unravel. I learned pretty fast that when looking to improve hooves you first have to look at the body, often make nutritional and environmental changes and then, with the help of a trim see these improvements reflect in the feet. To cut a long story short, several years later I completed my Diploma and qualified with Equine Podiatry Training as an Equine Podiatrist. I have several horses myself and believe that the needs of the horse should always come first. I am known for my gentle and patient nature, and helping horses is what I love to do.

I first became interested in hooves from a performance perspective, and how a horse’s hooves can influence this, through a long and frustrating experience with my own horse, who is bred ‘in the pink’ but was just not going like he should! After a thorough process of elimination, I decided in desperation to try taking his shoes off. Although I was initially sceptical, the effect of this undoubtedly made a massive positive difference to his feet and his performance – from day one, it was literally like riding a different horse. This is what first inspired me to learn more about hooves, and ultimately to become an EP – and now I understand what was going on with my own horse too. You can read the whole story on my website. My background up until then horse-wise had been fairly traditional – I’m also a BHSAI, have had my own conventional yard, and always competed a variety of (shod) horses, mostly in Dressage and Eventing. I have had to turn a lot of my thinking upside-down, so to speak! This also helps me to understand and bridge the gap between conventional hoof care and Equine Podiatry thinking. I qualified in October ’10, and the business has kept me working full time as an EP ever since, with a varied case load providing me with a lot of experience in virtually all types of hooves and their problems! In July 2017 I developed a ‘Hoof Rehabilitation and Barefoot Livery Centre’ where I can take horses on long or short term Rehabilitation, Full or Part Livery basis – there we can provide a specialised holistic, optimal and bespoke approach, encompassing all management aspects, which can be vital in improving and returning hoof health for many conditions. Like most EPs I came to the barefoot approach through one of my own horses that required a different approach. I was lucky to move to a barefoot rehabilitation yard and work with a fantastic EP who helped me to get my horses well and sound without shoes. Through working with her, and needing to do bits of tidying up in-between trims, I realised I had a passion for this different approach and wanted to train so that I could pass what I have learnt onto others, and to help other people just like me to take their horses barefoot successfully.I am based in Farnborough Hampshire, but travel to parts of Berkshire, Surrey and Hampshire.

I came across Equine Podiatry when I was researching barefoot trimmers before taking the shoes off my own ex-racer. The holistic, whole-horse approach instantly made sense and I set about finding out as much as I could. Horses have been the one constant through all the periods of my life and so, after seeing just how much better my horse’s hooves were under the care of an EP, and having fallen into an office job by no real design, I decided to study for the Diploma in Equine Podiatry. This was like opening a window into a whole new world, and I am constantly amazed and fascinated by the way horses’ hooves adapt to different situations, and the ways in which we can help them towards achieving their best form and function. I’ve not met a horse yet that I didn’t like or enjoy working with, but as an owner of a non-ridden horse myself, I particularly love working with horses that are retired or who have needs that mean they don’t have a “job” as so many horses are expected to. These horses are just as deserving of healthy, functional hooves as any competition horse and it’s my pleasure to help them (and their owners) achieve that. That said, it’s very rewarding to help people enjoy doing “normal” things with their unshod horses – long hacks and fun rides, competing and jumping. Barefoot is definitely not just for field ornaments!

Like many others, my interest in Equine Podiatry began with my own horses, partly by accident and then fuelled by their various ailments and injures! I’ve owned my own spotty Warmblood since he was a foal, and after backing him it quickly became apparent that we were achieving everything we wanted to without any need to put shoes on. He’s been happily barefoot covering miles of hacking and low riding club activities for his whole 13years. When we purchased our young New Forest pony for my daughter, we removed his front shoes and enlisted the help of an Equine Podiatrist to transition him to barefoot… and then I was hooked! His feet needed time to recover from the shoes. I loved the ‘whole horse’ approach to his hoof care and the amount of information that was shared to enable us to give him the best set up, and to enable him to continue with all Pony Club activities barefoot. As he is a Native Pony, managing his diet became a major part of his care, which also has a direct link to his hoof health. I slowly found myself reading and learning more about their feet, and when my horse had an impressive puncture wound in 2020 I found myself learning the internal anatomy and structures of the foot and became even more curious. After a career in the NHS and with my children nearly grown up (and with the encouragement of our lovely EP!) I decided to take the plunge and apply for the course in 2022, gaining my level 5 Diploma in August 2025. I now love spending my days working with horses, ponies, donkeys and their humans, and I really enjoy sharing the knowledge I have gained over the last few years of training and horse owning! Watching positive behavioural changes in horses that may have previously struggled with hoof care is so rewarding, and seeing a beautiful, functional hoof emerging over time will never get old. I am constantly learning, and as an Equine Podiatrist I hope to provide clients with reliable, current, evidence based, and holistic hoof care, enabling them to have a successful and sustainable barefoot journey together.

Unlike many of my colleagues, I came to Equine Podiatry not as an owner frustrated with hoof issues, but as a musician frustrated with my job! The logical career progression was obviously equine hoof care, and on a whim I applied to Equine Podiatry Training Ltd and haven't looked back, becoming a tutor for EPT in 2023. If you're a life-long learner, horses are a fascinating subject, and in 2025 I gained my MSc in Equine Science with the University of Edinburgh. I trim at Munchkins Miniature Shetland Rescue, and have a research interest in how pain and stress influence equine behaviour in a hoof care scenario, and what can be done to reduce unwanted behaviours.

Like a lot of other EP’s I came into the profession by way of my own horse, who came down with acute laminitis that wasn’t grass induced. There were no EP’s local to me and I was desperate to help my horse, so I spent every free moment researching different causes of laminitis. I fell into a rabbit hole that eventually led me to the UK Diploma in Equine Podiatry. Prior to the course I worked in the forensics industry, but in 2011 a lot of the UK’s forensic work went overseas, so this was the perfect opportunity for a career change. I have to say it was the best decision I ever made and I’m so pleased to find myself helping horses for a living. I live in Warwickshire with a mixed herd of Highland, Welsh and Shetland ponies.

Having had a passion for horses from since I can remember, I pursued a career in riding and teaching. I competed in Team Chasing to national championship level along with one day eventing and cross country. I gained my BHSAI at the age of 19 and continued to ride for owners and keep horses of my own. Life then took me in a different direction and I came out of horses for a few years. However, my passion for horses never left and I decided to re-home two ex race horses – Lance and Brego – back in 2015. Lance and Brego have been my biggest teachers in all my years riding and handling horses. We had years of unexplained lameness and issues despite trying every traditional route possible. I finally got in touch with an Equine Podiatrist who was able to rehabilitate their feet through correct trimming, the use of boots and pads and a holistic approach to their health. I was fascinated with how the equine hoof can be influenced through correct trimming, environment and nutrition. I watched my EP for years and saw my horses go from lame to sound and I was completely converted. It is down to the three of them that I took the Level 5 Diploma course and am now an EP myself. I find working as an EP extremely rewarding and am continuously impressed and fascinated with the equine hoof – it really is a triumph of engineering and if set up correctly, is capable of incredible performance and recovery.

Many years ago, I was handed 4 horses and some blunt tools in the Australian outback. An hour later, I got started on prepping those feet for cold shoeing. It was a fairly painful and humiliating experience but I loved it. Later in life, I acquired a small herd of conservation grazing ponies who’s feet piqued my original interest. It was a natural progression to 2.5 years of detailed, careful training with EPT Ltd and a new career. I am fascinated by horses (and donkeys), and of course their incredible hooves. I love my job, working with amazing animals and supporting owners to help their equines grow healthy, strong hooves, whether those hooves are needed for long distance endurance riding or playing with herd mates. As with most podiatrists I became interested in hooves when traditional methods wasn’t working for my horse, questions were left unanswered and no signs of progress. I can honestly say since joining the Equine Podiatry course I have never looked back and my horses have never been happier. Some how over the last ten years my competion yard has slowly turned into a yard full of rescued horses, but it has given me the opportunity to understand the needs and demands on both the horse and rider competing it higher levels and for horses that need positive reinforcement to get over trauma and be rehabilitated. I come from a BHS back ground with my Stage 3 and BHSAI, competing in British Showjumping, British Eventing and the Blue Lights Horse of the Year. Whilst the BHS has given me a good foundation of knowledge I enjoy learning about Holistic approaches to horse care and enjoy clicker training for fun and to overcome behavioural issues.

Hi, I’m Olivia, Prior to becoming an Equine Podiatrist I worked as an Equine Sports Massage and Rehabilitation Therapist. I hold a BSc(Hons) in Equine Psychology and Sports Science with Nottingham Trent University, and an Equine Sports Massage certification which was awarded by The College of Animal Physiotherapy. Naturally, my curiosity led me to Equine Podiatry as I quickly realised that hooves were the missing part to the whole-horse approach. I am now a qualified Equine Podiatrist serving the Leicestershire/Nottinghamshire borders and parts of Derbyshire. I have a particular interest in Laminitis rehabilitation, capsule shifts and negative-palmar/poor posture cases. I integrate my equine body work expertise within my equine podiatry sessions and can offer a whole-horse centred approach.

A lot of EPs found their interest in hoofcare when a horse of their own ran into hoof related complications whilst shod. My background in caring for, riding, and competing a barefoot horse is quite unique in that this has been the norm for me from early teens onwards, due to my Mum having completed the EPT course back then. So rather than searching for an alternative solution for a poorly hooved horse, the idea of successfully working/riding/competing a barefoot horse was already completely normal to me having done just that (PC/RC/BE level) through my teens. After having some time away from horses altogether through my late teens/early twenties, I decided to have a complete career change from a very boring desk job in finance. Since retraining and becoming self employed, I’ve found Equine Podiatry to be a far more rewarding and fulfilling career path. Whilst I relate to my competitive clients, and seeing their success is really exciting to follow, I’ve surprised myself in finding that the cases that I find rewarding in a really profound way are the ones that are maybe older, or less comfortable, and are beginning to fade, and find a second wind once they transition to being barefoot. Those cases make me feel all warm and fuzzy, and without knowing it at the time, they are the reason I left the confines of the desk job. Our training really highlights how it is the whole horse that will impact the success or failure of keeping a horse barefoot, and the more real-world experience I get, the more I feel the gravity of that statement. For this reason I’d love to gain further qualifications in other areas of horse health. I’ve looked into a few options, but haven’t yet settled on one – watch this space!

Having been in pursuit of the Holy Grail of a usable barefoot horse, even over Cornish granite, for several years, and always falling at the last. I eventually took my friend’s advice and got some “proper training”. Up until then I had been trimming my own horses and because I had the tools I was trimming her horses, in return for eggs. I found the course fascinating, if only school had been like this!!!! Since then I really haven’t looked back and neither have the horses and owners in my care, I have always wanted a career with horses and have always been fascinated by hooves. Perfect!

I am the UK’s most northerly EP and one of only four in Scotland. I’m based in Easter Ross with clients in the Ross-shire, Sutherland and Inverness-shire areas. One of my current horses, a TB mare called Charisma, was my motivation for getting into equine podiatry. In a quest to understand and resolve some of her (many!) issues I read a lot about horse anatomy and physiology, behaviour and training, feeding, saddles – lots of bits of the ‘horse jigsaw’. Hoof health was a ‘jigsaw piece’ that kept cropping up and I realised just how interrelated all the pieces are. I enrolled on the EPT course in 2016 and qualified in 2018. Initially I just wanted to help Charisma and my other horses and some friends’ horses locally but my passion for the work, combined with a growing demand for EP services in the north of Scotland, has led me to establishing Alba Equine Podiatry. I own and manage Lower Weare Retirement Livery with horses kept on grass and a grass free surfaced track specialising in providing a safe environment for those with metabolic conditions. All horses are required to be barefoot so I decided to learn how to care for their feet , transition them to barefoot on arrival and provide a diet suited to their needs to provide optimal hoof health. Feet are a mirror of the health of the horse. Healthy feet enhance the wellbeing of the horse which in turn enhances performance of the horse. I will do my best to support horse owners help their horses to get there, whilst keeping any handling and trimming intervention such that it gives a positive experience to the horse. As a medical professional with a lifelong interest in human anatomy and physiology I found that horse hoof anatomy is equally fascinating and hugely complex – not just a piece of rigid bone, but a delicate arrangement that needs to be in balance between nutrition, movement and wear.

Like many Equine Podiatrists my hoofcare journey started with my own horses. I transitioned my heart horse Ronnie to barefoot as he found shoeing uncomfortable due to arthritis. Shortly after this, my lovely horse, Tonto, developed an abscess and had to undergo surgery. At that point I knew I needed to learn more about what could have prevented this and the alternative approaches that could have been taken. Living in rural Argyll in Scotland, finding regular hoof care is challenging and the more I started to learn about the hoof and how this linked inextricably with the rest of the horse, the more fascinated I became. I became fully qualified as an Equine Podiatrist in June 2025 and now hold a Level 5 Diploma in Equine Podiatry. As an Equine Podiatrist, I aim to educate owners to find the right diet and environment, so a healthy hoof is grown as a consequence of a healthy horse. I am also a Hoof Boot fitter and offer this service to existing and non clients alike. I am the proud human to Ronnie my 18hh ISH, Tonto my 17.2hh Clydesdale, my mini shetland crew (Jack, Victor and Garfield) and Louis the donkey. Ronnie and I used to compete across the UK up to BE100 and at working hunter, however we all now enjoy a slower happy hacker pace of life around our farm and the hills in Campbeltown.

When I bought my first horse in 2003 I knew in my head that not all horses needed shoes. But my horse had been out of work for a while, had poor feet and was sore on the cotswold stone tracks around the yard where I kept him, so I put shoes on, because he was obviously one of those horses who needed shoes. However he had intermittent lameness issues even with the shoes on. I found an EP in 2006 and decided to try taking the shoes off, seeing as they were not keeping him sound. My horse had problems with the transition to going barefoot so I made it a priority to try and understand how best to help him be as comfortable as possible. During that time I become more and more fascinated with the amazing engineering feat that is the horse’s hoof. This has fuelled my interest in the field of Equine Podiatry, leading to a change of career from looking after computers to looking after horses. Sadly I no longer have the special one, due to age related issues but I used to ride English and Western and have competed in both barefoot. We used jump at competition to about 2’6 but higher at home. We hacked out when weather and work allowed, sometimes completely barefoot, but often with a set or two of hoof boots. I still have three barefoot mares, one horse and two ponies, living the life of Riley as lawnmowers in my fields.

Growing up in an Endurance household, I have been surrounded by competition horses, crewing at FEI level over several years. This is where I began to really appreciate the ‘No hoof, No horse’ statement, seeing hoof care become performance limiting, impacting soundness and the future ability of the horse. This led me to pursue Equine Podiatry and I’m now a firm believer that every horse has the potential to be barefoot. I just love horses! I was fortunate enough to grow up surrounded by them and had my own pony from a young age. I have two now and they are my entire world! For a long time I wasn’t sure what career path I wanted to take but I knew I wanted to be working outside and surrounded by horses. And that’s what I found. I love being an equine podiatrist and what every horse and pony teaches me. I am calm and patient and I especially love to work with rescues and ‘delicates’. I have been lucky enough to have had horses most of my life, but I have always had them shod and kept traditionally as this is what I was taught was the right thing. It wasn’t until I got two foals in my 20s that I began to question everything from the way we keep them to training and handling. Then after many years of working as a groom I wanted a different career. At the time my two very young horses were not getting on with traditional hoof care. One of which had some behavioural issues with my farrier at the time and the other was suffering from some low grade laminitis and significant white line disease. After doing some research I fell down a rabbit hole that I have never got out of. I have found something that I am extremely passionate about and I think just makes sense. I take a whole horse approach to hoof care to give your horse the best hoof care I can.

I came into the world of horses later in life, while working at a local animal sanctuary. What began as a general husbandry role soon developed into a more specialised path, as I moved through various departments and eventually became a veterinary assistant and horse handler. It was during this time that I was trained in barefoot trimming by a local farrier, to help meet the growing needs of the sanctuary’s herd. Over ten years of hands-on experience later, I discovered the Equine Podiatry Association (EPA) and their training school, Equine Podiatry Training (EPT). It was exactly what I’d been looking for to deepen my knowledge and formalise my skills, and I’ve never looked back. Two years of hard work and dedication led to me qualifying with a Level 5 Diploma in Equine Podiatry, the highest barefoot hoof care qualification available in the UK, Ofqual-recognised and Lantra-certified. At the age of 13 years old I got my first horse Kizzy. I was so excited to get out competing and having fun. But sadly she was diagnosed with navicular just 6 months later. She was put on box rest and hence my farrier recommended we just removed her shoes. The changes to the back of her foot were remarkable, each time the farrier came he would take measurements and comment on how much her feet were improving and she gradually became sound again. This is where my passion for barefoot began. My young family and I moved to the Isle of Mull in 2005 and in 2011 horses came back into my life. I met my fantastic colleague Bonny Mealand who came to trim a highland mare we had on loan. Her passion inspired me to take up a career in Equine Podiatry, hence starting the EPA diploma course in 2012. Hey, I’m Annie, “AnnieRose EP”. Qualifying as an Equine Podiatrist in 2025 with my Level 5 Diploma in Equine Podiatry has been a dream come true and I couldn’t be happier with my career because of the difference I make to horses and their owners. Educating owners about what influences a healthy hoof, identifying changes in management that need to be made and seeing a horse improve as a consequence of this care is truly heartwarming. It can be a challenging road of recovery for some and this makes it even more rewarding when I see all of that hard work paying off with a horse and owner who are both feeling better. Through academia, work life and hobbies, I’ve covered the realms of Psychology, Neuroscience, Animal Care, Equine Management, Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory work and Equine Insurance – all of which taught me more about my passion for animal welfare, especially at the veterinary lab and that’s when I enrolled for the Level 5 Diploma in Equine Podiatry (class of 2022) – I wanted to make a direct difference to the animals, as and when they needed me. Like many of my colleagues, it was my own horse who began my journey into the barefoot world. After taking the plunge in 2018 and finding myself an EP, we have never looked back! I learnt so much from my EP and truly loved the journey I took with my own horses that when I left full time education as an 18 year old fresh out of A-levels, I knew straight away I wanted to become an EP and enrolled into the course, gaining my level 5 diploma in Equine Podiatry in Oct 2025. As one of the founder members of the EPA Bonny has been practising and promoting responsible hoofcare since 2005. She offers experienced advice, support and workshops for owners of equines on their barefoot journey. Combining this with skilled and compassionate handling techniques and an in depth understanding of species appropriate management that can be realistically implemented in a domestic setting. Like many other Ep’s I developed an interest in hoof care when my friesian mare developed complex hoof problems. Once I started looking into the world of equine hoof care I found that there was a lot of contradictory information available. At the time I had an excellent EP who gave me accurate and clear advice which helped me navigate my way through the muddle and this drove my desire to learn more and expand my equine skill set to include hoof care. In 2022 | enrolled on the Equine Podiatry Level 5 course and graduated as an Equine Podiatrist in 2025. I have had horses since I was 11 with a short break whilst my children were young. Since returning to horses in 2013 my horses have been barefoot. A decision that has changed my life and theirs for the better. My areas of interest in the equine world are in equine behavioural sciences, ethical training and positive reinforcement training. Previously I have always worked in the arts or creative sector, having trained in ceramics originally. Being practical, adept and good with my hands is a skill I have always had and this has helped me as an Equine Podiatrist. This combined with my lifelong love of horses and fascination for hooves made equine podiatry the perfect careers path to follow.

I was lucky enough to grow up surrounded by horses and have ridden since the age of five. When I was a teenager, my Mum made the decision to take all of our horses barefoot due to the sad loss of one of our horses following a kick injury. It took some time for them to transition but soon they were back to hacking, jumping and competing…No shoes were no problem! These days I am the proud owner of three gorgeous barefoot geldings; a thoroughbred, a cob and an irish sports horse. We enjoy hacking, groundwork, dressage and the occasional bit of jumping! Hello, Dave Rayner here. I came to the equine world later in life, having spent years observing family and friends deeply involved in the industry while I remained on the sidelines. Over time, I began to notice recurring issues, many of them related to hoof health and found myself drawn to the work of various hoof care practitioners as they tackled lameness and other challenges. As I neared the end of a full military career, I knew I wanted to pursue something hands-on, outdoors, and centred around animals. After speaking with farriers and equine podiatrists, I decided to fully commit to the equine world and I haven’t looked back. The learning curve was steep, but I embraced it with enthusiasm. Coming in as a blank slate, free from preconceptions, allowed me to approach hoof care with an open mind and a fresh perspective. I’ve trained using the most current and progressive practices in equine podiatry, and I’ve built my approach on clear observation, honest communication, and evidence-based methods. I quickly became passionate about tackling hoof pathologies especially those considered irreversible and I find great reward in helping horses recover, thrive, and return to soundness. Equine podiatry perfectly combines my love of horses and my passion for science. In my early career, I trained as a developmental biologist and got my PhD in Stem cell genetics. Then I became a high school science teacher. After sharing and loaning horses for years, I finally got the opportunity to have my own. Being a scientist, I couldn’t help but question what I ‘knew’ about how to care for horses, particularly shoeing. So my barefoot journey began…Then my horse collection grew by one and my adopted horse was, at first, terrified of having his hooves handled, so I re-trained him using positive reinforcement. Now I trim his hooves without even having to tie him. He whickers in anticipation at the sight of my trimmer’s apron and gently lifts his legs when I point at them. As an Equine Podiatrist it is my mission to provide hoof care that is grounded in the best possible knowledge and underpinned by sound science. Like many EP’s my journey began with my own horse. That horse was my fabulous Welsh x TB who had been my partner in crime for many years at that point. He’s an excellent communicator and it became obvious that he was unhappy with his front feet. Great shoeing from a good farrier helped, but I couldn’t help but feel we were just covering up the issue. So I bit the bullet and pulled his shoes. I will never forget the look of relief on his face as he first sank into his pads in his new boots. Looking back, I know now that his feet were appallingly weak. But 5 years on he’s still sound on them, and they haven’t caused him any issues since. Once his shoes were off, the rest of my herd had their shoes pulled and I watched, fascinated as they all changed and improved. I figured I’d better learn how to do it all properly. And the rest as they say is history. I still love watching those big, early changes Nowadays, me and my gang practice Ecole de Légèretè (a form of French Classical Dressage) – for which I am Trainee Foundation Instructor. We also enjoy hacking – love to go exploring in the Peak District and some of the brilliant forests that Nottinghamshire has to offer. And we enjoy playing at side saddle and eventing too.

My first horse was shod because I was told this was what you must do, back then, you weren’t doing it right if you rode an unshod horse! He had intermittent lameness problems and seemed to have perpetual thrush, but I always felt that we were just unlucky, rather than that there was more I could be doing. It wasn’t until I got my first young horse in my twenties, and witnessed the beauty and resilience of a natural hoof that I started to question things. It was the farrier I used then that suggested maybe I didn’t need to shoe my youngster when I started riding him, that maybe his feet could cope without shoes – and to my delight – they did! Under the supervision of an excellent UKNHCP trimmer I started to keep my horse’s hooves “tidy” between trims with an old rasp and this is where my interest in feet started to accelerate. The more I learned the more I wanted to know. Why did one of my horses seem to go footsore at certain times of year, but the other one didn’t? Why did the horse I was riding seem to need a trim more often than the one I wasn’t? The Diploma in Equine Podiatry answered all of my questions and so much more, giving me what I can now only describe as a life consuming obsession with horse’s feet, but also diet, environment and all the other things that contribute to hoof health. Natural Hoofcare is a journey of continuous learning and I enjoy working with other hoofcare professionals and Equine Podiatrists, as well as attending courses for continuing professional development – every horse is different, it’s all a question of finding the right solution for the individual horse and owner, and I relish each new opportunity to embark on that journey with a client. If your horse is under current veterinary care for a foot related issue I will always request a consultation (this can be via telephone) with your vet prior to trimming your horse, including sight of any radiographs which have been taken.

I have had a passion for horses for as long as I can remember and spent much of my childhood researching all aspects of horse care and spending as much time in their company as possible. I would volunteer my help to anyone who would let me, until I finally got my own pony in my early teenage years. My desire to work with horses began early on. As a scientist and experienced teacher thereof, aspects of conventional hoof care did not make biomechanical sense to me on a foundation level. Despite my instincts on the matter I always followed the advice of those I considered more experience equestrians than myself. It wasn’t until my older horse was diagnosed with arthritis, side bone and navicular that my Vet and Farrier suggested to take her shoes off. Taking her barefoot dramatically improved her comfort levels and we had many more years before she was fully retired. I was very happy with the work my farrier was doing, but, it became increasingly difficult to book in regular appointments due to both of our commitments which left my horses sometimes going too long between trims. My solution was to learn to trim myself. It was during my training that I realised that keeping a horse barefoot was not as simple as just learning to trim and balance the hooves; that nutrition, environment and a whole host of other variables are as much of a factor as the trim. I was lucky that I was always interested in researching up to date studies of these factors individually and so my own horses transition was relatively event free. It has been fascinating, however, to acknowledge and learn about the challenges that others must deal with to keep horses successfully barefoot, enabling me to support other owners and their barefoot horses. I enjoy being part of the Equine podiatry association as the CPD opportunities available, continue my education in line with up to date research, provide supportive collaboration and healthy debate, ensuring that best practices are followed and progress continues.

I first became involved in barefoot back in 2003 whilst living in Australia. When my thoroughbred mare Lucy came to me, she had problems with persistent bruising, white line damage and flaring. The farrier couldn’t tell me what was causing it, let alone what to do about it. So after a number of shoeing cycles I became frustrated that all my efforts to make sure she was as comfortable as possible (saddle fit, chiropractic and dental work), were being undermined by the state of her feet. A few friends at my yard kept their horses barefoot and the difference in hoof health was evident (even to the layman that I was a the time). I took some ‘self help owner trimming courses’, and supported by the fantastic Australian barefoot community was able to massively improve Lucy’s feet. I’ve kept my horses barefoot ever since, and was really pleased when I returned to the UK seeking a new profesion to find a course of the quality of that provided by Equine Podiatry Training Limited. The breadth and variety of how the horses’ hooves react to what is happening in their environment, and to their diet and workload is immense and the course has set me up for a lifetime of learning about this crucial part of our beloved horse’s anatomy. I love working with my clients and supporting their efforts to get their horse’s hooves as happy and as healthy as they can be. I also enjoy working with nervous and unconfident horses, I find that taking my time to help them cope with the trimming process pays in the long run – they often become my smoochiest clients!

Having ridden since I was 9, I always intended to work with horses, but after graduating with a BSc Hons Degree in Equine Science and Management I found myself following a very different path. Something was always missing though, so when a friend and I were discussing the struggle to find an available Equine Podiatrist and she jokingly suggested I train to do it myself, a spark was ignited and now here I am. I feel I’ve finally found the career I was destined for. I particularly enjoy the process of transitioning horses out of shoes, providing the feet with the parameters necessary to become the healthiest they can be. Working with nervous horses to gain their trust and build confidence is another aspect of the job I find incredibly satisfying. I’ve had my horse Spencer since he was 4 years old, but he’s now getting on in years and is pretty much retired. I was gifted Chico in 2024 when his only companion sadly passed away. At age 12 and unbacked, introducing him to ridden work will be my next big project.

I originally learned to trim to help one of my own horses who had been lame for over a year with extremely serious quarter cracks. The results were better than I could ever have hoped for, and I decided to qualify as an EP so I could help others. I’ve since recovered many serious cases as well as helping lots of owners who just prefer their horses to work without shoes. My practice is heavily biased towards remedial work, especially laminitis. I have a research interest in laminitis, with a particular interest in low grade laminitis. My partner Clare and I share four horses. With Jazz (in the photo), I attempt classical dressage, spook-free hacking and extreme clicker training.

I am delighted to be on this path as a qualified Equine Podiatrist and member of the EPAUK. My own barefoot horses encouraged me to dive deeper into the world of equine podiatry and inspired me to understand how correct management and hoof care can help horses thrive barefoot, promoting soundness and long-term wellbeing. I became very interested in barefoot hoofcare back in 2016, after my mare Sally was first diagnosed with arthritis. Having thought I would be retiring her I removed her shoes and found an Equine Podiatrist to look after her hoofcare. Over a period of time it became clear that she was more comfortable with this all round holistic approach and I was able to bring her back into work (and now in 2026 she is still in light work at 25yrs). Throughout this journey our Podiatrist and I would be discussing Sallys nutritional requirements, which I was also already focused on due to her sweetitch and I found myself further understanding the link between diet and hoofcare and having a much greater understanding of how the two are linked. I also have a mini spotted pony who had suffered from laminitis with his previous owners and this understanding (along with a diagnosis of PPID) was also invaluable for his rehabilitation and ongoing care. I started my training to become an Equine Podiatrist in 2019 and qualified as one of the first two EP's in the UK to hold the level 5 diploma in Equine Podiatry in 2022 - the highest standard of qualification in barefoot hoofcare available today. Covering Hampshire, parts of West Sussex and areas of Surrey, I offer routine hoofcare with nutritional and environmental support to help owners create and maintain an all-round healthy environment for their horses and to maximise strength and performance of the hooves (after all, no foot, no horse!) Also providing specialist support for nervous horses as well as pathological cases such as; laminitis, navicular NPA and more, with strong established working relationships already in place with a number of vets, behaviourists, bodyworkers and para professionals in the area, I am happy to work with your chosen team or discuss how a team approach could benefit if needed. Hoof boot fitting also available alongside or as a standalone appointment- carrying a wide range of fit kits to suit almost all requirements.

As an Equine Podiatrist I promote a “whole horse approach” recognising the connection between hoof health with nutrition, metabolic health, environment and management. Hi I'm Charlotte I initially wanted to study Equine Podiatry as there was a real lack of trimmers/EP's in my area and I could see that my already barefoot mare needed some attention from a specialist due to ongoing issues, so I decided to embark upon a new career in the industry and here I am. And I love it! I have a real range of horses under my care and especially enjoy working with laminitis rehab cases, ottb's transitioning out of shoes and capsule shifts (as this is what my mare was struggling with at the time). Me and my turbo cob Peggy‚ compete in SJ, ODE's, Dressage, drill riding and are hoping to try our hand at barrel racing this year. We also cover a lot of miles at home out hacking, which is what we love doing best really. I have been working with and around horses for around 32 years now and what a passion and privilege it is. Especially in our field where we get to make such a difference to the well being of the horses in our care.
